Maria Fogdestam Agius

Dr Maria Fogdestam Agius is a partner at Westerberg & Partners, Stockholm, and Head of the firm’s Dispute Resolution group. Her practice focuses on representation to States and private entities before domestic and international courts and tribunals in matters involving public international law, investment arbitration and transnational disputes.
Maria has acted in investment treaty arbitrations on the side of investors as well as of States and has experience of all stages of such matters, from preliminary measures to post-award proceedings and sovereign enforcement actions. She also has wide public international law experience, including from State-to-State disputes before the International Court of Justice and defending sovereign immunities before courts in multiple jurisdictions. She also practices in business and human rights, advising on corporate sustainability responsibilities, ESG disputes and human rights due diligence.
A graduate of the SCC Arbitrator Training Course, she also sits as arbitrator.
Prior to joining Westerberg & Partners, Maria practiced at public international law firm Volterra Fietta in London. She holds masters and doctoral degrees in public international law from Uppsala University. She has acted as clerk and junior judge at a Swedish district court and as intern with the International Criminal Court.
